Ellyanne is 10 years old student from Peponi School. An EcoWarrior Award Winner. In 2018 she was nominated Kenya’s Youngest Mashujaa (Hero) an honor by the Government of Kenya & is Kenya’s Youngest Climate Change Ambassador. At 4 years of age in kindergarten, they did a project on heroes. These heroes included Martin Luther King, Henry Wanyoike, Uhuru Kenyatta, Florence Nightingale, Barack Obama, Wangari Maathai, Nelson Mandela, and Mahatma Ngandhi.
She really fell in love with Wangari Maathai’s tree planting. So she started planting trees initially at home, then in Karura Forest. 10 became 30, then 30 became 50 & now she has planted 496 trees and thousands more in groups during world environment day. She visits schools influencing students on Climate Change, Tree Growing, Wildlife Conservation, Plastic Pollution & has set up tree nurseries in over 79 schools. In 2019 she is targeting to plant 10,000 trees in different counties.
After attending United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA4) in 2019, the #GreeningKenya launch & many other high level meetings, she realized there is greater need to reach out to Business & Environment Leaders as well. To ensure their commitment to setting the right policies for Nature & the Climate Change Agenda. Therefore she started interviewing them to challenge them on commitment to nature.
Here is one of the interviews with Safaricom’s Chief of Corporate Affairs Mr. Steve Chege. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQW31d9PKOY&t=315s
In December 2017 she was invited to the United Nations General Assembly as the youngest delegate where she learnt more about Climate Change & met leaders, ambassadors, and directors from all over the world. She has since founded Children With Nature & we go to schools educating students on climate change, deforestation, plastic pollution & blue ocean economy. She has received several awards in recognition of her work.
Since January 2018, she has taken students especially from slum schools to visit the United Nations Environment headquarters & World Agro Forestry for exposure & to learn the science behind trees & started a tree seedlings project in schools targeting to grow about 400,000 tree seedlings which will be used for tree planting exercises. Good quality seeds were kindly provided to her by World Agro Forestry/ ICRAF.
Ellyanne in July 2018 was also nominated to be an ambassador Kenya Climate Change & Art & Essay Competition a project by UNDP, USAID & Ministry of Environment. She visited schools creating awareness & did campaigns using social media to reach more students & was awarded for it.
Ellyanne has produced poems & music to create awareness of plastic pollution & the environment. She has also interviewed dignitaries in the quest to create awareness on Climate Change.
